    Understanding sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is not a character flaw or something you simply have to live with. More often, it is skin that has been overwhelmed — and with the right support, reactive skin can become calm, comfortable and resilient again.

    Understanding sensitive skin

    What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is skin that reacts more easily and more strongly than it should — with stinging, burning, redness, tightness, itching or flushing in response to products, weather or touch. For some people sensitivity is something they have always had; for many others, it develops over time.

It helps to separate two things. Some skin is genuinely sensitive by nature. But a great deal of what people call sensitive skin is actually sensitised skin — skin that has become reactive because its protective barrier has been worn down. The good news is that sensitised skin can recover.

    Why skin becomes sensitive

Skin becomes reactive when its barrier — the protective outer layer — is compromised. A healthy barrier keeps moisture locked in and irritants out. When it is weakened, water escapes more easily and the things you put on your skin reach the deeper, nerve-rich layers far more readily, where they cause stinging and irritation.

Modern skincare habits are often the cause. Over-washing, over-exfoliating, layering too many strong actives, chasing trends and constantly changing products all chip away at the barrier. Stress, harsh weather, hard water and pollution add to the load. The result is skin that has simply had too much.

Signs of a damaged skin barrier

When the barrier is struggling, your skin will usually tell you. Learning to read these signs early lets you change course before the sensitivity becomes entrenched.

    • —Products that used to feel fine now sting, tingle or burn.
    • —Persistent redness, flushing or blotchy patches.
    • —Tightness, especially after cleansing.
    • —Rough, flaky or dehydrated areas alongside oily ones.
    • —Skin that feels reactive to almost everything you try.

    Common triggers

Sensitive skin has a lower threshold, so things that other skin shrugs off can set it off. Identifying and reducing your own triggers is a huge part of calming reactive skin.

    • —High-strength acids, retinoids and other potent actives used too often.
    • —Harsh foaming cleansers and physical scrubs.
    • —Strong fragrances and a long list of synthetic additives.
    • —Very hot water and aggressive towel-drying.
    • —Extreme weather, wind, hard water and sudden temperature changes.

    How to calm reactive skin

Calming sensitive skin is mostly about doing less. The aim is to remove the irritants, give the barrier what it needs to rebuild, and then leave the skin alone long enough to recover. This often feels counter-intuitive — but simplicity is the treatment.

Pare your routine right back to the essentials: a gentle cleanser, a nourishing moisturiser and daily sun protection. Use lukewarm water, pat rather than rub, and introduce anything new slowly, one product at a time. As the barrier heals, you will usually find your skin tolerates far more than it did at its most reactive.

    • —Simplify to a few gentle, well-tolerated products.
    • —Pause all strong actives and exfoliants while the skin recovers.
    • —Focus on nourishing, replenishing ingredients that rebuild the barrier.
    • —Protect from the sun and harsh weather every day.
    • —Give it time — barrier recovery takes weeks, not hours.

    The Skin Nurture approach

We believe in working with the skin, not against it. Sensitive skin is rarely asking for more — it is asking for less, and for kindness. So our formulations lean on simple, natural, well-tolerated ingredients that support the barrier rather than challenge it.

Rather than overwhelming reactive skin with potent actives, we focus on nourishment, hydration and calm. We choose education over fear, because once you understand why your skin is reacting, you can stop the cycle and let it settle. Nurture yourself — and gentle, consistent care is what turns sensitive skin back into comfortable skin.
