What causes acne?
Acne forms when pores become blocked with a combination of excess oil and dead skin cells. This creates an environment where naturally present bacteria can multiply, and the skin responds with inflammation — the redness, swelling and tenderness of a breakout.
Several things feed into this: hormones, which influence how much oil the skin produces; genetics; stress; and, very often, the products and habits we use on our skin. Crucially, acne is not a sign of dirty skin or poor hygiene. Over-washing in pursuit of 'clean' skin frequently makes it worse.
Inflammation and acne
Inflammation is central to acne — both as a cause and a consequence. Inflamed, irritated skin is more prone to breakouts, and breakouts in turn create more inflammation. It becomes a loop, and in deeper skin tones that inflammation also leaves behind the dark marks that so often outlast the spots themselves.
This is why calming the skin is so powerful. When you lower inflammation, you address acne closer to its root rather than just fighting the visible spots. A calm complexion breaks out less, heals faster and is far less likely to be left with lingering marks.
Why aggressive treatment often backfires
The most common mistake with acne is treating it as something to be attacked. Stripping cleansers, harsh scrubs, drying spot treatments and stacks of strong actives all promise clearer skin — but they frequently deliver the opposite.
When you strip and irritate the skin, you damage its barrier. A damaged barrier becomes inflamed and reactive, and inflamed skin breaks out more. Worse, when skin is stripped of oil, it often responds by producing even more. So the very products marketed to fix acne can lock you into a cycle of dryness, irritation and fresh breakouts.
Supporting healthy skin
The alternative is to support the skin's health so it can find its own balance. This means gentle cleansing that removes the day without stripping, light nourishment that doesn't suffocate the skin, and a calm, consistent routine that lowers inflammation over time.
It also means resisting the urge to pick, over-wash or constantly try new things. Acne-prone skin thrives on consistency. When the barrier is intact and inflammation is low, the skin is simply less hospitable to breakouts — and any marks left behind fade more readily.
- —Cleanse gently, twice a day, without stripping the skin.
- —Keep the skin lightly nourished — never starve oily skin of moisture.
- —Avoid harsh scrubs and over-exfoliation.
- —Don't pick or squeeze, which deepens marks and spreads inflammation.
- —Protect from the sun to prevent breakouts leaving lasting dark marks.
The Skin Nurture approach
We believe in working with acne-prone skin rather than declaring war on it. Breakouts are a sign of a skin that is out of balance and inflamed — and the most effective long-term answer is to restore calm, not to escalate the fight.
Our gentle, natural formulations are designed to cleanse and nourish without stripping, helping to lower the inflammation that drives breakouts and the marks they leave behind. We choose support over aggression and education over fear, because clearer skin is built on calm. Nurture yourself.
